light-dark, male-female....high-low, sun-moon, and so on...yin-yang type of stuff...it's everywhere...people love to split things into categories...to organize characteristics...
hang with me for a sec...it all comes back to somewhere....I'm just not sure yet, where that is....
this is totally bizarre....as in....weird things that pop in your head and then...you're like- why is that in my head? what does it all mean? :)
ok...so here's the deal....for some reason....this popped in my head...and I started looking at it...and the symbolism....behind it...chevrons.
chevron
....the basic V....and repeating this V makes up the chevron....in ancient civilizations (sorry no specifics here, look it up, ) there's a female direction and a male direction....for the obvious symbolic reasons. :)
and.... these two coming together make up the X, male and female, balanced...or rather, explained of this symbolism in ancient glyphs, could mean intercourse between male and female...I'm not trying to be all hetero-centric...but, you can look at these energies as in, yin and yang....balanced energies, or what have you.....
so, naturally- I see this in the....XX, in my inguz tattoo....
but not only that....
the chevron pattern is beautiful and strong and powerful....rich
as in..... pavers on a street...brickwork....even in wood detailing on the floor...
strength, purpose, and beauty....art and function= magic to me....a bit of a miracle...it's romantic...and inspiring and everlasting...and curious...and fascinating....
the breasts of the female form laying here...as well as legs....chevrons.
just, you know....finding the beauty in the day-to-day.....or even, making beauty in the day-to-day... creating beauty...
and what catches our eye...what we notice...well....contrast....contrast is hugely important for humans to notice things, back to the yin yang type of thing....you see this everywhere....even in linguistics...the contrasting intonation patterns...making it easy for humans to decode the message...contrastive elements....and the Noticing Hypothesis (Schmidt, 1990)...things that are noticed, can more easily get processed and learned (second lang acq)....in art, contrastive elements attract attention...draw the eye into the piece...it's important...and we notice these things and then of course, love to group and organize...recognize patterns...as a linguist this is key...recognizing patterns, similarities cross-linguistically...putting together the puzzle of human language...marveling in the variety while making connections.
and now...of course....I see chevrons everywhere....now that I'm aware of them...and now...you know...when you start going down the rabbit hole of the internet and start looking at art, aesthetics...universal symbols and whatnot....it then, led me to the golden ratio.... which is fascinating...things that we are attracted to in art adhere to this 1.618 ratio....even a doctor did a study on the ratio of the uterus...and found that during the most fertile years for a woman...the uterus is closest to this golden ratio....at it's healthiest and most fertile. just....wow.
and this....illustration of the golden ratio and nautilus....
I didn't realize...when I painted this of a wave, so so long ago....horrible horrible pic of it, but you get the point... this one was four canvases...you can see the lines...which kinda go well with the lines in the painting...this was oil...and I took the pic of it through a view finder, of a slide...so, ya- really crappy pic of it...but....probably a golden ratio in it. :)
and faces...well...you learn this in classical drawing...the measurements....the distances between eyes, nose, chin- golden ratio....and Da Vinci's golden ratio lines of the human body....using the navel as a baseline location.
the golden ratio...a fundamental characteristic in the universe...just...kind of amazing stuff...
not coincidentally...so many things linked together that work...
just taking note of what we like to see....balance...contrast...how we like to organize what we're exposed to...making sense of the world around us....
as Van Gogh said, "There is no blue, without yellow and without orange."
so true.
so, today...ramblings? yes....but...stuff to think about...or rather...stuff I've been thinking about...
freaking universe....
peace....love...and just...stuff....stuff to think about...ponder....consider....ruminate....
